We reported yesterday that Texas head coach Rick Barnes has been told to make changes on his staff or be fired. We also said the we had heard that Barnes was leaning towards refusing to make any changes, and therefore would not return to Texas. The Austin American-Statesman is now the first to report that Barnes is officially out as the Longhorns head coach. It appears that the decision was made today, and the official announcement will be made Sunday or Monday. According to the terms of his contract, Barnes would receive a $1.75 million severance package if he’s terminated by the end of the month. That number drops to $1.5 million on Wednesday.
In 17 seasons as the head coach at Texas, Barnes compiled a 402-180 record. Barnes has also been the head coach at Providence, Clemson and George Mason.
More on this when it becomes official.
