Morehead State Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson has released the following statement regarding head coach Sean Woods and the men’s basketball program:
Morehead State University has been involved in an extensive administrative review resulting from an incident reported to the institution by members of the men’s basketball team. The investigation was conducted independently from the department of athletics.
Effective immediately, men’s basketball head coach Sean Woods has resigned his position.
While some information is and will be a matter of public record, our process was internal and not informed by any other proceedings. With the resignation of Sean Woods, it is critical we use our energy and resources to ensure our student-athletes can thrive in the environment we provide them.
Coach Preston Spradlin will continue as the interim head coach this season, and the staff will stay in place for the remainder of the season as well. We will begin the process to conduct a national search for the head coach position.
I particularly want to thank our student-athletes for their patience and cooperation during this time. While disappointed in what brought us here today, I believe in the resiliency of our team and know they will continue to dedicate themselves to their utmost. We have four games remaining before conference play begins, and we expect to be competitive leading into the postseason.
Woods, who was suspended by the university back on November 22nd, has been charged with a misdemeanor count of battery resulting in bodily harm. The charge stems from an incident that happened when Morehead State was playing on the road at the University of Evansville.
