University of Detroit Mercy Director of Athletics Robert C. Vowels, Jr. announced today that head men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum has been relieved of his duties.
“After a careful and long review of the entire men’s basketball program, I determined it was necessary to have a change in leadership,” said Vowels. “I would like to thank coach McCallum for his eight years of service at the University and for all of his efforts.”
McCallum just finished his eighth year with the men’s basketball program ending the season at 16-15, 9-9 in the Horizon League for sixth place. In his eight years, he totaled a 130-132 record, including 66-72 in league play, and made two postseason appearances.
His Titan team won the Horizon League Championship in 2012 and earned a berth to the NIT in 2013.
Vowels also announced that assistant coaches Steve Payne and Jay Smith will not be retained.
A national search for the next head men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
