The Covenant men’s basketball program rounded out its full-time coaching staff as Josh Brown was named assistant coach for head coach Neal Young.
Brown replaces Jake DeLaney, who recently left the program to become an assistant coach at NCAA Division I member Gardner-Webb.
“My wife, Haley, and I are extremely excited to begin our new phase of life at Covenant,” Brown said. “I want to thank Coach Young and Dr. Tim Sceggel for welcoming my family into the Covenant family. The opportunity for us to grow in a Christ-centered athletic department is something we are excited about.”
Brown spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at NAIA member Northwestern Ohio where he assisted in all aspects of daily operations within the program for head coach Caleb Williams. Prior to Northwestern Ohio, Brown was an assistant coach at Mount Vernon Nazarene for two years as he completed his master’s degree.
“I am thrilled that we were able to bring Josh to the mountain,” Young said. “His previous experience has prepared him to step in immediately and impact our players and this program as a whole in a positive way. He will have a hand in every aspect of this program and I am excited for him to begin working with our players because I know they will benefit greatly from his leadership.”
Added Young, “Josh has benefited greatly from working with two previous head coaches who I have a great level of respect for at MVNU and UNOH. I am excited for him to bring new ideas that he picked up on those two stops to Covenant and help us take the next step as a program.”
Brown’s coaching experience began in his undergraduate days at Urbana University as he conducted preseason workouts and assisted in practices and analysis during his senior year in the program. He was a three-year player at Urbana and appeared in 80 games, making 42 starts, in his career. Brown also ran cross country at Urbana and produced one of the top five 5k times in program history.
In addition to his athletic career at Urbana, Brown also served as the university’s SAAC president for two years and was the Mountain East Conference SAAC vice president.
“I can’t wait to join the rest of the college in discipling the next phase of athletes who are passionate about their faith,” Brown added. “As a coach, I’m looking forward to contributing wherever I can in the program both on the court and in the lives of these young men and their families.”
Brown graduated from Urbana in 2015 with a degree in mathematics and adolescent young adult education. He earned a master’s degree in organizational management from Mount Vernon Nazarene in 2017.
