Walter Shaw won the 300th game of his coaching career Sunday, Feb. 15, when Brunswick Community College defeated Denmark Tech 111-91 in a men’s basketball game.
“It’s a blessing to be able to stay here long enough to make it happen,” said Shaw, now in his 15th season as BCC coach. “A blessing to have players that allow this to happen. It’s the ultimate testament to loyalty, longevity and success.” BCC dominated early as it won for the first time this year in NJCAA Division 1 Region 10 Conference play.
“We’re a work in progress,” Shaw said. “It’s a great group of guys. They’ve done everything that we’ve asked them to do in order to win ballgames and represent our college.“This is probably the best group of guys I’ve enjoyed being around. I hate it for them that we don’t have a better record at this point. But I also told them this is the group I want to take to Hutchinson, Kansas, because they’ve done everything that we’ve asked them to do. They were at Town Creek Elementary School volunteering on Friday (Feb. 13) before they left for Cape Fear.” (Cape Fear beat BCC on Friday.
Shaw, 38, is the eighth and youngest active men’s basketball coach in this state to have at least 300 victories at his college. The others are Bobby Dawson at Lenoir Community College, Stephen Joyner Sr. at Johnson C. Smith University, Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University, John Lentz at Lenoir-Rhyne University, Ron Lievense at Barton College, Bob McKillop at Davidson University and Roy Williams at the University of North Carolina. He has had 91 former dolphins sign scholarships to four year colleges with 41 of them playing at the NCAA division one level.
“It’s an honor to be part of that group,” Shaw said. “I appreciate all that the school has done to allow this to happen.”
