Buena Vista head men’s basketball coach Brian Van Haaften has announced that former Newell-Fonda boys basketball coach Paul Loos will be joining his staff beginning this fall.
Loos had served as head coach for the Mustangs the last 24 years after serving two years as the Fonda boys coach for two years before the schools merged. During his tenure, he compiled a career record of 434-192, guided teams to nine state tournaments and captured four state titles (1991, 1997, 1999, 2000).
Only three other coaches in the state’s history have won more state titles than Loos – Jim Eekhoff (Hull-Western Christian) and Paul Moon (Davenport) have each won seven while Iowa City West coach Steve Bergman has five.
The Mustangs carried a 25-0 mark and a #1 state ranking in Class 1A into the 2014 Iowa State Tournament before suffering their only loss of the year to eventual state champion West Lyon in the first round.
"We are really excited to have Paul join our staff," says Van Haaften. "We have been friends for 26 years and I can’t wait to finally work together. He will provide another set of eyes to help our program improve. He has been one of the top coaches in the state over the last 25 years and there is no doubt that he will make a difference as we continue to chase championships in this program."
Loos joins a Beaver program that has chalked up more than 350 wins and eight Iowa Conference championships during Van Haaften’s 18-year career.
In addition to his coaching duties at BVU, Loos will remain as Newell-Fonda’s elementary and middle school physical education instructor.
