Christian Butler has been named Interim Head Coach following long-time St. Scholastica men’s basketball coach David Staniger’s departure.
“First and foremost I would like to thank Coach Staniger for bringing me onto his staff a year ago. He has been amazing to work for and I’ve truly enjoyed our time together. I wish him the very best on his new adventure. I would also like to thank Jessica Cherry and the athletic department for this opportunity and the support they have shown me. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to lead these young men. I look forward to pursuing the growth and development of this program and continuing to build long lasting relationships with our student athletes.” – Christian Butler
Coach Butler played collegiately at Hope College for one year prior to joining the coaching staff as a Student Assistant Coach for three years. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Leadership & Psychological Principles of Sports before earning a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies from Montana State University Billings, where he was also a graduate assistant coach for two years.
Butler went on to be assistant coach for three years at Aurora University in northern Illinois for three years before joining the Saints basketball staff as an assistant in the 2023-2024 season. This is his first head coaching opportunity.
Self-described as a relationship-driven coach who values his players as people first, Butler has helped coach six basketball players who have gone on to play professionally. He is looking forward to instilling that relational focus as a part of the new team culture at CSS.
“I am excited that Christian Butler has chosen to stay on as the Interim Head Coach for CSS Men’s Basketball. Besides a wealth of knowledge, Christian is full of energy and heartfelt emotion for the game and pride for the CSS basketball program. I look forward to his impactful leadership this season.” – Jessica Cherry, Director of Athletics.
