BYU head basketball coach Dave Rose announced today the hiring of Heath Schroyer as an assistant coach.
“We’re very excited to have a coach of Heath’s caliber join our staff,” Rose said. “He will be a great fit with our coaches and players. Heath has had success everywhere he’s been and brings knowledge, experience and a work ethic second to none.”
Schroyer comes to BYU with 20 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level, including most recently at NC State, where he served as assistant head coach under Mark Gottfried in 2016-17. A respected recruiter and former head coach, Schroyer began his coaching career at Fresno Community College before a four-year stint as an assistant coach at BYU from 1997-01.
“I’m very excited to be back at BYU,” Schroyer said. “Coach Rose and I have remained great friends since working together 20 years ago and I have a great fondness for this program. It was my first Division I job. When this opportunity presented itself, it just felt right. I’ve heard nothing but great things about the players in the program and I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and working with those guys.”
As a member of Steve Cleveland’s staff at BYU, Schroyer coached alongside Rose and helped rebuild the Cougar program from a one-win team in 1996-97 to Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament champions in 2000-01.
Following BYU, Schroyer was an assistant for one season at Wyoming. In that season with the Cowboys, Schroyer helped Wyoming receive their first NCAA tournament bid in 14 years.
In 2002, Schroyer was hired as head coach at Portland State. At the time of his hiring, Schroyer was 30 years old, the second youngest NCAA Division I head coach in the nation. His Portland State team improved from five wins in his first season to 19 wins and a Big Sky Conference title in his last.
Schroyer also had head coaching stints at Wyoming from 2007-11 and UT-Martin 2014-16. While with the Cowboys, Schroyer led Wyoming to a College Basketball Invitational (CBI) bid in 2009, the program’s first postseason appearance since 2003.
When he was hired as head coach at UT-Martin in 2014, Schroyer inherited an eight-win team. In two seasons, Schroyer guided the Skyhawks to a 41-28 mark and a pair of appearances in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).
In 2015, Schroyer led UT-Martin to 21 wins and a trip to the CIT semifinals. He was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and a finalist for the mid-major Coach of the Year. The next season, Schroyer and the Skyhawks won 20 games, were the Ohio Valley Conference West Division champions and advanced to the second round of the CIT.
In addition to his assistant coaching stops at BYU, Wyoming and NC State, Schroyer also served as associate head coach at Fresno State (2005-07) and an assistant at UNLV (2011-14). During his three seasons at UNLV, Schroyer helped the Runnin’ Rebels win 71 games, including seven over ranked opponents. His value as a recruiter was on full display at UNLV as he helped the Runnin’ Rebels land four McDonald’s All-Americans and two recruiting classes ranked in the top 10 nationally. Schroyer was twice named ranked among the top 15 assistants in the nation in his three years at UNLV.
Schroyer prepped at the prestigious DeMatha High in Hyattsville, Maryland, where he played for legendary coach Morgan Wootten. He earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Armstrong Atlantic State in 1995 and his master’s degree in institutional leadership from National University in 1996.
A native of Walkersville, Maryland, Schroyer married Kim Ortega in May of 2014. He has two children from a previous marriage.
