Joe Cabral, the former associate men’s basketball head coach at Lasell College, has been named to the same position at Dean College. The move was announced on Wednesday by head coach Rico Cabral and confirmed by the College’s Director of Athletics, Todd Vasey.
“Adding a coach of Joe’s caliber is a real boost to our program,” said Dean head coach Rico Cabral. “He has a proven track record of recruiting and developing student-athletes and that will be critical as we move forward towards NCAA membership.”
Cabral comes to Dean after spending the 2016-17 season with the Lasers where he helped guide them to 19 wins and a berth in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship game.
In his new role with the Bulldogs, Cabral will assist in all facets of the program, including recruiting, student-athlete development, alumni outreach as well as practice preparation and in-game coaching.
While with Lasell, Cabral recruited six student-athletes who went on to become all-conference performers and their high octane offense averaged more than 80 points per game.
Cabral spent the 2015-16 season at Rhode Island College after having spent the two previous seasons at Lasell. During his first stint with the Lasers from 2013-15 when he served as the recruiting coordinator as well as an assistant coach, he helped guide them to the GNAC Championship game and the ECAC New England Championship contest.
His coaching career began at Dean during the 2012-13 season as the recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs. During his first stay with Dean, he helped the Bulldogs advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 21 Championship game and finish the season at 17-6.
Cabral was a four-year letter winner at Mount Ida College, where he was team captain for three seasons. He started 71 games for the Mustangs during his playing career and appeared in 100 overall.
A three-time GNAC Academic All-Conference selection, Cabral was a member of the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society for business students.
A 2012 graduate of Mount Ida College, Cabral is a multiple time Dean’s List honoree with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
The Bulldogs open their season on Friday, November 17 at WPI’s Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament against Eastern Connecticut State
