Guillermo “Will” Cabrera, has been named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Richard Bland College of William & Mary. The announcement came from Scott Newton, Director of Student Life & Athletics.
Cabrera brings a wealth of knowledge to Richard Bland, both as a player and coach. He was a three year student-athlete at Messiah College, after transferring from NAIA College of Notre Dame in California.
The Paraguay native arrives at RBC from NCAA Division III Penn State Harrisburg University, where he served as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator under Don Friday. At Penn State Harrisburg, Cabrera has been a member of a record breaking season to include the most wins in school history at 25-5 overall record, 2023-24 United East Conference Champions, NCAA Tournament Round of 32 appearance, and a top 30 Nationally Ranked defense. Cabrera assisted in the development of Donyae Baylor-Carroll and Nate Curry who reached large scoring milestones of 2,000 and 1,000 points, as well as being recognized as All-League, All-Region, and All-American honors. Prior to joining Penn State Harrisburg, Cabrera spent two years as an Assistant Coach, Recruiting Coordinator, and DEI Designee at Lebanon Valley College, where he organized and coordinated all aspects of the recruitment and player development workouts, and created a Diversity Equity Inclusion mentorship program for all student-athletes. Prior to Lebanon Valley College, Cabrera was the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Director of Athletic Recruiting at Mount Aloysius College for four seasons where he led the program to three straight AMCC Tournament appearances (impacted by COVID-19 during the 4th season). Cabrera held a top 30 Nationally Ranked defense while birthing the program’s first appearance in the AMCC Semifinals in the 2018-19 season.
“First of all, I want to thank Director of Athletics and Student Life, Scott Newton and the committee for entrusting me with the tremendous opportunity to lead the Men’s Basketball program at Richard Bland College of William & Mary,” says Cabrera. “I aim to foster a culture of excellence where every young man feels valued and respected in our program.”
Cabrera also served as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Mansfield University, Messiah College, and an Assistant Coach within the Paraguay Men’s National Basketball U16 program from 2021 to 2014.
“We are extremely excited to welcome the next era of Statesmen Men’s Basketball under the leadership of Coach Cabrera. Our search committee was extremely impressed with his experience and determination to create an impact on student-athletes lives and the program,” says Athletic Director Newton. “We are certain that he will have this program competing for championships, while mentoring them to be role models at Richard Bland College.”
Before joining the college ranks, Cabrera was the Head Coach at Hershey Christian and served as an Assistant for the Bolivia National Team. He has worked a number of camps, most notably as a coach and counselor for Hoop Group Elite Camps ever summer.
Cabrera noted, “I look forward to working with the staff, administration, and getting to know our student-athletes at Richard Bland College.”
Cabrera is a 2006 graduate of Messiah College where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development Family Education. He is also a member of the NABC, Member Latino Basketball Association Rising Coaches.
