Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball head coach Greg Kamansky announced Monday the hiring of Matt Okada as an assistant coach within the program.
After one year coaching the Allan Hancock men’s basketball team and previous experience as the video coordinator for University of the Pacific at the Division I level, Okada joins the Broncos’ program that went 22-7 last year and reached the second round of the NCAA postseason.
"Matt brings a great energy and attitude to the program," Kamansky said. "He’s very knowledgeable with the technical aspect of coaching after his time with UOP. Matt will be great with instruction and he’ll relate well to our student-athletes."
Okada will play an instrumental role in CPP’s recruiting, camps, academic monitoring and on-court instruction. Kamansky enters his 15th season as head coach and has totaled 292 wins. Associate head coach Damion Hill will begin his 13th season in 2014-15. The Broncos’ new campaign will feature a Nov. 9 exhibition at Arizona.
"I’m excited to return to the four-year level of coaching and join one of the elite Division II programs in the nation," Okada said. "This exciting opportunity also gets me closer to my hometown."
A Gardena native and Narbonne High School graduate, Okada helped guide the Allan Hancock men’s basketball program to a 16-14 record in 2013-14 as the team qualified for the State Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season.
Okada was also instrumental in the success of the recently-launched Hancock Youth Basketball Club. More than 80 children from the Central Coast enrolled in the club to learn the fundamentals of basketball. Okada coached the HYBC’s traveling team that played in a few tournaments.
Okada earned a sports management degree from the University of Pacific. He served as a student-manager and video coordinator for the UOP men’s basketball team. In the 2009-10 campaign, the Tigers captured the Big West Regular Season Championship. During 2007-08, Okada spent time as an executive offices intern for the Philadelphia 76ers.
