Here are some names that I’ve heard surrounding the search at Cal. I can confirm that Cal has hired DHR International to conduct the search…
• Mike Brey – Head coach Notre Dame. His name has gotten a lot of play out here in Dallas. Cal AD Sandy Barbour was an administrator at ND before taking over at Cal in 2004. The former Duke assistant just wrapped up his 14th season at Notre Dame. Holds a 399-211 career record, which includes five seasons as the head coach at Delaware.
• Travis DeCuire – Associate head coach Cal. Has been on Mike Montgomery’s staff for the past six season. Is Montgomery’s choice to replace him – not sure how much weight that holds though. Was an assistant at Old Dominion before coming to Cal.
• Mark Few – Head coach Gonzaga. A long shot in my mind. Has a great thing going at Gonzaga and has repeatedly spurned offers from other schools. I have heard from more than one person though that there is serious interest on Cal’s behalf here though.
• Ben Howland – Former head coach UCLA. Has made it very clear that he wants to get back into it. Spent 10 seasons as the head coach UCLA, was the boss at Pitt before that. Took UCLA to three Final Four’s in a four year stretch in the mid 2000’s.
• Russell Turner – Head coach UC-Irvine. Former Mike Montgomery assistant at Stanford and with the Golden State Warriors. Has turned the program around at UC-Irvine – led his team to 23 wins this past season and received an NIT bid.
