Cal State Bakersfield Assistant Basketball Coach Kevin Mays arrested on human trafficking charges

According to multiple reports, including on from ABC-23 in Bakersfield, CSUB assistant men’s basketball coach Kevin Mays, 32, was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of human trafficking and related crimes, police said. The Bakersfield Police Department began investigating Mays in August after receiving an anonymous tip that a woman was being trafficked across California, Oregon, and Washington. Detectives later found the victim in Sacramento, where she identified Mays as her alleged trafficker.

Investigators linked Mays to the victim through traffic stops, rental car records, and multiple online ads. When officers served a warrant Thursday, they arrested Mays and searched his car and apartment, reportedly finding loaded, unregistered firearms, narcotics, and evidence of drug sales.

A former CSUB player from 2014 to 2016, Mays has been an assistant coach with the program for six seasons. The university confirmed he has been placed on administrative leave.

He is being held in Kern County Jail on charges of human trafficking, pimping, weapons violations, and drug offenses, with a court appearance set for Monday at 3 p.m.
