Derrick DeVries has been named a new assistant men’s basketball coach at Calvin University.
DeVries joins the program on a full-time basis after serving in a volunteer role during the 2021-22 season.
Prior to joining the Calvin coaching staff, DeVries finished a prolific four-year career for the Knights by winning Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Year following the 2019-20 season.
DeVries received All-America honors that season from the Division III News, D3hoops and the NABC after setting the program’s single-season record with 667 points (25.7 points per game) and posting nine 30-point games. DeVries closed his four-year career with 1,588 career points, good for eighth on the program’s all-time scoring list.
DeVries is excited to join the coaching staff with his former head coach, Bill Sall, and is looking forward to learning from him. “I’m really thankful for Coach Sall asking me back,” DeVries said. “I love basketball and am thrilled to stay active in the sport in this capacity.”
His former coach is just as happy to have DeVries as part of the program going forward. “I’m super excited to have Derrick on staff,” Sall said. “He filled in well on a volunteer basis last year and was great for the team.
Bringing him on board is awesome for us, and I’m thankful for the individuals who helped make this (assistant coach position) possible.”
Sall believes DeVries will have an impact on the court as well as in recruiting in his new capacity. “I think he’ll be instrumental in helping us with recruiting,” Sall added. “I’m looking forward to him hitting the ground running for us in that area, as well.”
The Calvin men’s basketball team is scheduled to open its 2022-23 season on November 8, when it hosts Grace Christian (MI).
