Head coach Kevin McGeehan has completed his men’s basketball staff at Campbell University with the hiring of Deon Curry as director of basketball operations and Greg Robbins as graduate assistant.
Curry spent the 2012-13 season in the same position at Campbell. Robbins joins the staff after graduating in May from Richmond, where he was a member of Spider teams that won 90 games during his four-year career.
A former football and basketball standout at Michigan State, Curry worked in the hospitality management field before entering the collegiate coaching field.
At Campbell, Curry’s daily responsibilities include overseeing the team’s travel arrangements as well as internal scheduling and distribution of the alumni newsletter. He is also involved in the summer basketball camp.
"Deon brings a wide range of experience as a high level college football and basketball player, and real world experience in hotel restaurant management," said Coach McGeehan. "He has also been around professional basketball his entire life. Additionally, his work here at Campbell this past year and his familiarity with the University and community will be a tremendous asset. He is an impressive people person who will excel in this profession. "
A four-year letter winner as a wide receiver at Michigan State, Curry also played for Coach Tom Izzo’s 2006-07 basketball squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Curry earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for football and graduated with a B.A. in hospitality business in 2008.
During his prep career at Detroit Country Day, Curry was listed among the nation’s top 75 wide receivers and earned all-region honors in basketball. He also worked as a locker room assistant for the Detroit Pistons from Oct. 2000-July 2004.
He is the son of Michael Curry, who played 12 seasons in the NBA and is now the associate head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers after serving as head coach of the Pistons in 2008-09.
Robbins joins the Fighting Camel staff after a standout career at the University of Richmond, where he served as captain and started all 34 games as a senior. He was a member of the Spider teams that twice advanced to the NCAA tournament and finished in the 2011 Sweet 16.
He served as counselor at the University of Richmond Spider Basketball camps from 2009-13 and also at the Kobe Bryant Basketball Academy from 2010-13.
At Campbell, he will assist in various phases of the Fighting Camel program with emphasis on film exchange and scouting, coordinating recruiting mail outs, overseeing the manager staff as well as summer camps.
A native of Wynnewood, Pa., Robbins earned his B.A. in political science. He joined the Richmond program in 2009 after finishing his prep career as the second all-time leading scorer in Lower Merion High School history behind NBA all-star Kobe Bryant. He was a three-time all-state selection by the Pennsylvania Associated Press.
In addition, Robbins was a high school All-American in soccer and two-time all-state performer, who also earned a club national championship in 2006 with the FC Delco Hammerheads.
"I have known Greg since his sophomore year in high school, having recruited him to Richmond and coached him for four years," said McGeehan. "He brings incredible experience as a player who had great success at Richmond including 90 wins during his career and two NCAA appearances and a Sweet 16. Greg has a true feel for the game and his understanding of how to play will be great for the Camels. I think he will quickly become an invaluable asset to the program."
Curry and Robbins join a Fighting Camel program that has called the 3095-seat Gore Arena inside the Pope Convocation Center home since November 2008. Over the last five years, the Camels have amassed a 48-24 (.667) record at the facility.
