Sounds like a pretty messy situation at USI. Head Coach Rick Herdes has resigned over what the school’s athletic director called "irregularities" within the program. Not sure exactly what they are, but the USI Athletic Department said they will be submitted to the NCAA once their internal investigation is complete. Herdes has had a ton of success at USI – the former assistant to Bruce Pearl was 200-59 in eight seasons, including a trip to the 2004 National Championship game. It sounds like AD Jon Mark Hall wants to move quickly here to replace Herdes. Here are some of the names that I’ve heard so far:
Stan Gouard – University of Indianapolis Head Coach and former USI star. Led USI to a National Championship in 1995. Was 9-18 this past season at UIndy.
Former USI assistant Marc Hostetter. He resigned last year to settle in Evansville with his family. He also played on the 1995 National Championship team and is apparently very well respected by the administration and alums.
Linc Darner – former Purdue guard and current Head Coach at Florida Southern. Was also the head coach at St. Joseph’s (IN). Has a career record of 135-81.
I’ve also heard Bellarmine Head Coach Scott Davenport’s name (a former Louisville assistant), but not sure that he would leave Bellarmine.
It’s early, but Gouard looks like the leader. His dynamic personality as well as his history at USI make him a great choice. Bring back part of the successful past to help clean up some of the mess that is there now.
