Cantens adds four to FIU Basketball Staff

FIU men’s basketball head coach Joey Cantens has added Lane Below, Kenny Boynton, Adrian Davila and Jabril Durham to his inaugural staff as assistants, he announced Wednesday.

Boynton and Durham (previously a graduate assistant at Florida State) will be in their first-ever collegiate assistant coaching roles, while Below served the last two seasons as head coach at Gulf Coast State and Davila comes over with Cantens from Daytona State, where he was an assistant.

Lane Below, Assistant Coach

Below was named an assistant coach on Cantens’ staff after spending the previous two seasons as head coach of Gulf Coast State.

In 2025-26, Below led the Commodores to a 27-8 record and a semifinal appearance in the NJCAA DI Playoffs. The team averaged 82.5 points per game and 40.4 rebounds per game, going 12-7 in their region.

In his first season as Head Coach of the Commodores, Below guided the program to a 23-10 overall record and an appearance in the FCSAA Region 8 Championship. The Commodores showed balance on both ends of the court while establishing themselves as one of the top teams in the state.

Under the leadership of Below and his staff, sophomore standout Christian Harmon had a remarkable year. Harmon was named the 2025 Panhandle Conference Player of the Year, earned NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Second Team All-America honors, and was selected to the FCSAA All-Tournament Team. He started all 33 games, averaging 16.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest. Harmon shot an impressive 48.4 percent from the field and 47.4 percent from three-point range, where he connected on 101 triples to finish 10th nationally. He reached double figures in scoring 30 times, posted seven 20-plus point performances, and scored a career-high 30 points against Daytona State on March 14.

The 2024-25 campaign also produced one of the most successful years in program history for player advancement, as nine Commodores earned scholarships to continue their careers at four-year institutions. Seven moved on to NCAA Division I programs, while two continued at high level NCAA Division II programs. Advancing to Division I were Christian Harmon (Arkansas State), Truman Claytor (University of Arkansas Little Rock), Chip Brunt (Northwestern State), Tichyque Musaka (Stephen F. Austin), Prince Johnson (Eastern Illinois), Marcus Pigram (Western Illinois), and Brycen Blaine (Charleston Southern). Emmanuel James (Lincoln Memorial) and Christian Valarezo (University of West Florida) each signed with Division II programs.

Serving as an Assistant Coach for the Chipola Indians from 2022-24, Below played a pivotal role in the team’s remarkable success. Under his guidance, the 2023-24 Chipola Men’s Basketball program achieved back-to-back Panhandle Conference Championships, 2024 Region VIII Champions, and made their third consecutive National Tournament appearance. Notably, during the 2023 season, Chipola advanced to the Sweet 16 at the National Tournament in Hutchinson, KS. During Coach Below’s time with the Chipola Indians, he helped guide seven players to NCAA Division I institutions.

Before joining Chipola, Below honed his coaching skills during two seasons as an Assistant Coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he collaborated with hall of Fame Coach Tim Ryan. Prior to that, he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Mississippi, working under head coach Kermit Davis, contributing to the team’s success in advancing to the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

Below’s journey in basketball started as a collegiate player at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, under the guidance of the legendary Gene Bess, followed by two seasons at Ole Miss, playing under head coach Andy Kennedy. He graduated from Ole Miss in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies and was recognized for his academic achievements as a member of the Southeast Conference Academic Honor Roll. Later, as a graduate assistant for the Rebels, he earned a master’s degree in health promotion.

Originally from Advance, Missouri, Coach Below is deeply rooted in the basketball community. He is married to Hannah Below, a former NCAA Division I basketball player at Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Evansville. Together, they have two children.

Kenny Boynton, Assistant Coach – Scouting

The second-leading scorer in Florida Gators history with 2,033 career points and the record holder for three-pointers made in school history with 333, Boynton was named an assistant coach for scouting Cantens’ staff.

Landing his first coaching role, Boynton spent the last decade-plus playing overseas, most recently for the Zhejiang Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association. During his career overseas, Boynton has had stops in China, Israel, France, Turkey and Russia after going undrafted out of college in 2013.

Under Billy Donovan, Boynton had one of the most decorated careers in UF history, being named coaches’ first-team All-SEC in 2012 after he was a second-team All-SEC in 2011 and 2013 and SEC All-Freshman in 2010. Boynton also picked up AP second-team All-SEC honors in 2012 and was honorable mention All-SEC in 2013.

A native of Pompano Beach, Fla., Boynton attended American Heritage School, where he was a standout in the state of Florida. In his senior season, Boynton averaged 33.0 points per game, including a game where he scored 61 points. He finished his high school career as the third-leading scorer in Florida high school basketball history. Kenny was also named to the 2009 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game and the Parade All-America first team.

Adrian Davila, Assistant Coach – Player Personnel

Davila, who spent the last three seasons at Daytona State on Cantens’ staff, was named an assistant coach for player personnel.

During the 2025-26 season, Davila guided the Falcons to a 27-8 record, 13-3 in conference, and a first-round win in the NJCAA Tournament.

In his first two seasons in Daytona Beach, Davila helped the Falcons to back-to-back school record 28 win seasons consecutively, qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time in 25 years and culminating in an Elite 8 run in 2024-25. Over that two year span, the Falcons won back-to-back Citrus Conference Championships and had winning streaks of 25 games & 17 games, reaching as high as a #2 national ranking on multiple occasions. During Davila’s time in Daytona, he has specialized in player development and game strategy, consistently improving player’s shooting percentages and assist to turnover ratios. His development has led to five First Team All-Conference players, six Second Team All-Conference players, two NJCAA All-Americans (Dorceus, Grullon) and one Conference Player of the Year (Dorceus), all of which progressed to Division 1 programs.

Prior to joining the Falcons, he was most recently at HS powerhouse Montverde Academy (FL), which holds seven HS national championships. He served as an assistant and player development coach ending in another successful trip to GEICO nationals. He worked with thirteen ESPN ranked high school prospects, including 2025 NBA 1st overall pick, Cooper Flagg, and 23rd overall pick, Asa Newell during their time at Montverde. In his year before arriving to Montverde, he was the head coach for US Prep, a post grad program that saw six players move on to the collegiate level in its inaugural season.

Davila spent the 2019-20 year as an assistant coach at Wayland Baptist University (NAIA), where they were a top 25 ranked team and received a NAIA national tournament invite before the COVID-19 pandemic cancellation. He was instrumental in scouting opponents and in the Pioneers’ player development, where he helped develop JJ Culver into an NAIA All-American and became only the fourth collegiate player to score 100 points or more in a single game. Davila also recruited future 2020-21 all-conference selections and SAC Freshman of the Year, Chinedu Okonkwo and Devin Avent.

Davila arrived at Wayland after a stop at NCAA Division II Midwestern State University. As an assistant at Midwestern State, Davila focused on skill development, guiding several players to All-LSC honors. He also functioned in operations and academic liaison roles for the Mustangs.

Prior to his time in Texas, the Orlando, FL native was heavily involved in the high school and post grad basketball scene. He was also an assistant director and coach for top Florida travel teams, including Team Parsons/CP25 and Q6 All-Stars, where he has helped place over 50 student athletes to the next level. Meanwhile, he spent seven seasons on the sideline for area high schools as an assistant and head coach, including at Lake Highland Prep where he won two state championships (13′ & 14′), a state runner-up (12′) and assisted in developing McDonald’s All-American and future North Carolina point guard Joel Berry along with Abilene Christian all-time leading scorer Jaren Lewis.

Davila earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL and is married to Rosa.

Jabril Durham, Assistant Coach

A former decorated player for the University of Arkansas, Durham was named an assistant coach on Cantens’ staff.

A native of DeSoto, Texas, Durham comes to the 305 after spending last season as a graduate assistant under Luke Loucks for the Florida State men’s basketball program while pursuing a graduate certificate in Athletic Coaching.

Durham earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas, where he was a standout guard for the Razorbacks. In his senior season, he started all 32 games and averaged 6.4 assists per game, ranking second in the SEC and No. 12 nationally with 204 total assists. He became just the fourth player in program history to reach 200 assists in a single season and recorded five or more assists in 19 consecutive games—one of the longest such streaks in Arkansas history. Durham was also one of only eight players nationally to record seven double-digit assist games and led the SEC with a 3.6 assist-to-turnover ratio, ranking No. 5 in the country.

Following his collegiate career, Durham played professionally overseas for a decade, competing in nine different countries. He won a championship in Latvia and was named Finals MVP.

At Florida State, Durham’s responsibilities included player development, mentorship, film editing and analysis, assisting with the scout team during practice, and supporting on-campus recruiting and official visits. He worked closely with the team’s point guards and contributed extensively to individual player development, including working with All-ACC guard Robert McCray V.

This staff will anchor the new era of FIU men’s basketball beginning in 2026-27.
