Connecticut native and former University of Vermont standout Tobe Carberry has been named an assistant coach for the Central Connecticut men’s basketball program. Carberry joins the Blue Devils after most recently spending four seasons at the University of New Haven.

Carberry helped lead the Chargers to a 21-9 overall record a year ago, which came on the heels of a 20-9 record in 2012-13, the first 20-win campaign in almost 10 seasons for the Chargers. The Chargers reached the postseason in each of the last two seasons.

In 2012-13 New Haven reached the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004 and earned its first win on the national stage with a victory over Dominican in the NCAA Division II East Region Quarterfinals. The Chargers’ 16-6 conference record and third-place regular-season finish were both the best for the team since joining the Northeast-10.

The prior season Carberry was on the sidelines as the Chargers posted a 15-13 record – the club’s first winning season since 2004-05 – en route to an appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinals.

Carberry moved to New Haven in 2010-11 after spending three seasons as the top assistant coach at Southern Connecticut State University.

After a standout career at the University of Vermont, Carberry spent five years in professional basketball leagues in the U.S. and Europe, including the NBA Development League.

At his alma mater, Carberry ranks 13th on the all-time scoring list with 1,235 points and also ranked in the top 10 in games played, field goals, assists, steals and blocked shots at the conclusion of his career. Carberry was also a finalist in the 12th Annual National Slam Dunk contest at the Final Four in Indianapolis in 2000 and was awarded the 2000 New England Division I Unsung Hero Award by the New England Basketball Coaches Association.

Carberry starred at Hillhouse High School prior to attending Vermont.
