David Sloan has been announced by head coach Tony Wingen, in his 29th year at the helm of the Carnegie Mellon University’s men’s basketball program, as the full-time assistant coach for the upcoming 2018-2019 season. Sloan will also serve as the Tartans’ recruiting coordinator.

“David Sloan is a terrific addition to our staff. His energy level and enthusiasm, along with his teaching ability, has allowed him to connect with our players immediately,” said Wingen. “With his background as a Division III athlete and coach, Coach Sloan understands the importance of the student-athlete experience. I look forward to him continuing the outstanding work of my previous top assistants.”

Sloan comes to Carnegie Mellon from Maine Maritime Academy, where he served as the top men’s assistant coach for two seasons and head recruiter. During his time at Maine Maritime, Sloan coached two 1,000-point scorers and the first player in program history to record a triple-double.

Prior to coaching the Mariners, he served as assistant coach at Boyertown Area High School in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. In addition, Sloan has coached at numerous camps, including the Tom Izzo Basketball Camp at Michigan State University, the Mark Gottfried Basketball Camp at North Carolina State University and the Maryland Basketball Camp at the University of Maryland.

Sloan is a 2014 graduate of Alvernia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training. While at Alvernia he appeared in 27 games for the Wolves basketball team and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He continued his education at Alvernia and served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer before earning his master’s in business administration in May of 2016.
