Carroll U’s Buchanan to Drake

David Buchanan has resigned as Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Director of Athletic Advancement at Carroll University to become the Director of Basketball Operations at Drake University, announced Joe Baker, Director of Athletics at Carroll.

Buchanan compiled a record of 63-37, including 43-27 in the Midwest Conference, in four seasons as the Pioneers head coach.

“I’ve truly enjoyed my four seasons at Carroll,” said Buchanan. “There so many great memories that I will take with me, and nothing can compare to the relationships I’ve been able to develop with all of the players and the coaching staff. I’ve been blessed to work with great young men that all share the same dream of winning championships.”

During his tenure, Buchanan’s teams qualified for three Midwest Conference Tournaments, including a MWC Tournament title in the 2011-2012 season. In all three years, the team advanced to the MWC Tournament championship game.

Following the team’s 2011-2012 MWC Tournament, the Pioneers stunned No. 16 Transylvannia University in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Carroll nearly made it to the round of 16 that season, falling just short to No. 22 Wittenburg University in the second round.

“The amazing support that our alumni have offered has been something that I will always cherish as well,” added Buchanan. “We would have an alumni presence at nearly every game we played, and that kind of commitment and passion is something I will never forget. The men’s basketball program is in a better place today because of the committed players I’ve been fortunate to coach and the passionate alumni and friends that support us on a daily basis.”

While at Carroll, Buchanan had six players achieve All-Midwest Conference and one claim the league’s Player of the Year award (John Hoch, 2009-2010).

Buchanan will join a new staff at Drake. Ray Giacoletti was hired as the head coach in March following six years as the lead assistant coach at Gonzaga University.

“This move is an excellent professional move for my family. Des Moines is a great place to live and I’ve got an opportunity to work with one of the best coaches and staffs in the country at Drake,” said Buchanan. “I’m certain that I will learn a lot as well as reflect on my experience at Carroll to guide me as I go. I’ll miss so many great people at Carroll as I begin a new chapter in my coaching career.”

Drake competes in NCAA Division I and is part of the Missouri Valley Conference.
