VMI Head Basketball Coach Andrew Wilson announced Tuesday the hiring of Michael Caswell as an assistant coach to complete his staff ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Caswell comes to the Institute after serving as head coach of Palm Beach Prep in Palm Beach, Florida, where he led the team to 15 wins this past season and coached eight student-athletes to receive an opportunity to play college basketball.
This past year, he also served as the 17U Senior Team Head Coach for Florida Pro, leading skill development in practice and tutored future Florida A&M signee Anthony Knowles.
“We are very excited to welcome Michael to Lexington,” Wilson said. “He will be a great addition to the VMI Basketball family and the culture we are building. He comes highly recommended from the former Florida State coaching staff and I believe he will bring great value to our program. Michael has a bright future and understands as a young coach the sacrifice it takes to succeed in the coaching profession.”
During the 2023-24 season, Caswell served as an assistant coach at Gettysburg College, helping the team to a regular season Centennial Conference championship – the first in school history – while guiding Jordan Stafford to Conference Player of the Year honors. He taught in-season skill development and served as the strength and conditioning coach.
From 2021-23, he served as a graduate assistant on the coaching staff at Florida State under legendary Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, earning experience as the Interim Video Coordinator and performed scouting reports and film edits for the team. Prior to this role, he was a student manager for the program from 2019-21.
Caswell’s roots in coaching began at Tallahassee Community College where he served as an assistant coach during the 2018-19 season.
A former collegiate student-athlete, Caswell played at Messiah University from 2015-17 before sustaining a career-ending injury and transferred to Florida State to finish his education.
Caswell earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology from Florida State in 2021 before going on to earn a master’s degree in sport management at FSU in 2023.
