NJCAA D1 Central Wyoming head basketball coach Brad Schmitt has stepped down, and has become an assistant at NAIA Carroll College (MT). Schmitt is CWC’s all-time leader in wins, the longest-tenured head coach in the program’s history.
Here is the presser from Carroll announcing the move (as well as announcing the hiring of Blake Isaacs as an assistant coach as well):
Carroll College Men’s Basketball Coach Dan Pearson has announced two additions to his staff entering the 2024 season, Brad Schmit and Blake Isaacs.
A summer of change brings several new faces to the hilltop for the Fighting Saints. Assembling a staff and roster has been at the forefront of the first year Head Coach Pearson’s summer agenda.
Brad Schmit joins the Carroll staff as the Lead Assistant following a highly successful six-year run as the Head Coach at Central Wyoming College.
Schmit is Central Wyoming’s all-time leader in wins, the longest-tenured head coach in the program’s history. A proven recruiter, Schmit saw numerous players move on to programs at the NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA levels.
Prior to his time at Central Wyoming, Schmit spent six years on staff at MSU Billings. He served as the assistant coach for four seasons and the associate head coach for two seasons. He got his start in coaching as an Assistant/Recruiting Coordinator at his alma mater, Morningside (Iowa), following a decorated playing career in which he finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer and most prolific 3-point shooter in the history of the college.
“Coach Schmit’s hiring was an early steal for our program.” Said Pearson. “Getting someone with his resume and experience to work with me and our athletes was more than I could have hoped for in the early build of our program. His recruitment network and capacity to build relationships with recruits has already proved invaluable in our early work together. Brad is a master skills development coach and will be key to one of our short-term program needs, which is to rebuild our camps and academies programs. The revamping of our camps and community engagement is core to what we are aiming to give back to the Helena community, and we feel like we have started building the right staff to accomplish this. We are so excited to welcome Brad, his wife, Jacque, and their three boys to Helena.”
Blake Isaacs has been hired to lead the newly-added JV program at Carroll, while also serving as an Assistant Coach.
A recent graduate of Purdue, Isaacs brings a background in player development with him to Carroll. Issacs has worked as an assistant with the Indy Heat, an EYBL team with numerous NCAA Division I products, as well as Head Coach of the Pocket City Basketball 17U team. He has plenty of prep experience, having worked with several different high schools in Indiana, and will get his first collegiate experience this season with the Saints.
“Coach Isaacs’ hire comes at a time of important additions to the program.” said Pearson. “Blake will head up our first JV team for the Saints while assisting with the Varsity, and we feel like we have found the perfect person for these positions. Blake is your proverbial hungry, young college coach whose eagerness to grow makes him an immediate asset for any program. Blake’s background in high school basketball in Indiana, a powerhouse state for prep hoops, gives our program a regional connection that we haven’t had since the Carson Cunningham days. Blake will immediately bring a recruitment familiarity in the Midwest and will hit the ground running with our athlete and community skills development. Blake’s drive and personality is a great foundation for a long coaching career, and we are thrilled to be part of that journey.”
