Howard College has announced Jared Champion as the new Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for the Hawks.
“We’re extremely excited to add Coach Champion to our program,” said Kyle Cooper, Men’s Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director. “Coach Champion brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience at both the NCAA level and the junior college level. We are lucky to have him.”
Champion, a native of Fairhope, Alabama, joins Howard College after spending 2022-2024 at Tarleton State University. During his tenure with the Texans, he served as a student manager, honing his skills in player development, recruiting, and both day-to-day and gameday operations. In his first season at Tarleton State, the Texans made their inaugural debut in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, and the Purple and White secured consecutive postseason appearances, marking a historic achievement for the program in its Division I era. The 2024 season saw Tarleton State achieve a remarkable 25-10 record, their best finish since transitioning to Division I.
Before his successful run at Tarleton State, Champion held his first assistant coaching position at Coastal Alabama South from 2019 to 2022 under Head Coach Robby Robertson. During his time with the crimson and white, he played a pivotal role in the program’s recruiting efforts, player development, and academic success.
Champion is a 2019 graduate of Fairhope High School and will receive his bachelor’s degree in general psychology from Tarleton State University in 2024.
“I am incredibly excited to join the Howard College Hawks,” said Champion. “I look forward to contributing to the team’s success and working with the players to reach their full potential. Howard College has a proud tradition in athletics, and I am eager to be part of its future.”
