Northern Illinois University men’s basketball head coach Mark Montgomery announced on Wednesday (Nov. 6) the promotion of Lamar Chapman to associate head coach. Chapman is entering his third season as a member of the Huskie basketball coaching staff.

“This is a very well-deserved promotion for Coach Chap and I am very pleased to be able to elevate him to associate head coach,” said Montgomery. “Chap has over 15 years of coaching experience at the college level and has a tremendous ability to connect with student-athletes, both on and off the floor. He has made a positive impact on our program and been a great asset to myself and our staff over the past two seasons and I know that he will continue to do a great job for this program.”

Last season, Chapman helped the Huskies to a 17-win season, tied for the sixth-most in program history, and their first trip to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Semifinals since 2003. NIU also recorded its third win in school history over a ranked opponent when it topped 14th-ranked Buffalo, 77-75, on January 22, 2019.

“I appreciate the confidence that Monty has shown in me with this promotion,” said Chapman. “I am very thankful that he has entrusted me with the added responsibility of this role, and I am honored to have this opportunity. I look forward to continuing to work with Coach Monty and our staff to help our student-athletes improve on and off the court every day.

Chapman came to NIU from Stony Brook, where in nine seasons he helped the Seawolves to four conference regular season championships and seven postseason appearances. Prior to his time in New York, Chapman had a pair of stints in the Mid-American Conference, working as an assistant at Toledo for two seasons, where he helped the Rockets win a MAC regular season championship in 2007, and Central Michigan for three years.

Following Tuesday’s exhibition, NIU will open the 2019-20 regular season on Saturday afternoon, November 9, when it welcomes Northern Iowa to the NIU Convocation Center. Tipoff against the Panthers is slated for 3 p.m.
