Chappell joins Arizona Men’s Basketball Staff as Assistant Coach

Arizona men’s basketball head coach Tommy Lloyd has announced that Brandon Chappell will join his staff as an assistant coach. Chappell spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Texas.

“It is exciting to welcome Brandon and his family to the Arizona Basketball family,” Lloyd said. “He is a high-character person that brings energy and enthusiasm every day that makes those around him want to strive for more. He will fit in great with the culture that we have built, and we can’t wait to get started.”

In three seasons at Texas, Chappell (“shuh-PELL”) and the Longhorns advanced to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2023, and averaged 23 wins per season. The Longhorns also won the 2023 Big 12 Tournament championship and finished the year ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press poll.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Coach Lloyd for the opportunity to join the Arizona Basketball family,” Chappell said. “It’s an honor to be part of such a storied program with a championship tradition, passionate fan support and a standard of excellence that few programs in the country can match. I’m excited to get to work and help our student-athletes grow on and off the court. Bear Down!”

Prior to Texas, Chappell was an assistant coach at UNLV for the 2021-22 season, helping three Rebels earn All-Mountain West postseason accolades.

From 2017-21, the native of Beaumont, Texas, spent four seasons on Tic Price’s staff at Lamar University. At his alma mater, the Cardinals won 20 games in 2019 and David Muoka was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2021.

Chappell spent one season (2016-17) as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith on the Division II level, winning the regular season and conference tournament championship. Prior to that, he served as a graduate assistant for two seasons at Northern Arizona University for then-NAU head coach and current Arizona associate head coach Jack Murphy, where the Lumberjacks tied the program record for wins in 2015.

He began his coaching career at Armstrong State, an NCAA Division II school in Savannah, Ga., for the 2013-14 season.

As a four-year member of the basketball team at Lamar (2003-07), Chappell was a two-time captain while playing for Billy Tubbs. He shot 39.4% from the 3-point line for his career and averaged 4.6 assists.

Upon graduation from Lamar, he embarked on a 5-year professional playing career in the Pro-A German Basketball League for BBC Bayreuth, TV Langen and Licher Basket Baerans.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in Business Administration-Marketing from Lamar University in 2006, Chappell went on to get his graduate degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona in 2016.

In high school, Chappell played along NBA Champion and ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins, as they helped Ozen High School in Beaumont to a 36-0 record and the 2001 Class 4A state championship as a junior. The duo also played together for the Houston Hoops AAU team.
