The Chowan University athletic department announced the addition of Charles Rhodes to the men’s basketball staff.  Rhodes returns to his alma mater to serve as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina native was a standout student-athlete for the Chowan Blue and White.

Head Coach Men’s Basketball Coach Brett Vincent noted, “We are glad to have Charles back on campus as an assistant coach. He had a wonderful playing career here. He brings college and professional playing experience to our program along with the necessary skillset to coach at this level. Charles relates well to our student-athletes and he is familiar with the Chowan community.”

Rhodes added, “I’m very excited and thankful to be back at Chowan. I gave the basketball progam everything I could as a player and I’m going to do the same as a coach. Coach Vincent has been doing an outstanding job here and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

After a four year career with the Hawks, Rhodes graduated as Chowan’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,082 career points and posted a school record 48.7% three-point percentage during the 2008-2009 season. He is one of ten 1,000 point career scorers as part of Chowan’s four-year classification era.

Over the course of his career, Rhodes was named to the NCCAA National All-Tournament team (2008) and CIAA All-Tournament Team (2011). Rhodes led the Hawks to the NCCAA National Tournament as a freshman and capped off his career by propelling the men’s basketball team to their first (and only) CIAA Tournament semifinal appearance in Chowan’s first year as part of the storied CIAA.

Off the court, Rhodes was a member of the Beta Beta Beta Biology honor society and Alpha Lambda Delta, an honor’s society for freshmen.

Upon graduation from Chowan, Rhodes competed for the North Carolina Jaguars as part of the American Basketball Association. He also worked for East Chapel Hill High school as a security guard before returning to the court in the professional arena. In 2014, Rhodes played for the club team Durham Wildcats in the British Basketball League before signing with the Tees Valley Mohawks.

Rhodes gained coaching experience through working at various youth basketball camps and as an assistant coach at Davidson County Community College. With Rhodes on staff, Davidson posted a 22-5 overall record in 2013-14 and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation.

Rhodes graduated from Chowan in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He recently attained a Master’s in Education from Durham University in Durham, England. Rhodes resides in Murfreesboro.
