Charleston Southern head men’s basketball coach Barclay Radebaugh announced on Wednesday that Tyler Murray will join the Bucs’ program as an assistant coach. Murray comes to CSU after spending six years on the coaching staff at Shorter University, including three as the Hawks’ top assistant.
Murray, a 2008 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, helped lead Shorter to a 34-3 record, a No. 1 national ranking and an NAIA Fab Four appearance in 2011-12. He was instrumental in the recruitment of five All-Americans and eight all-conference selections during his time at Shorter.
"I am so thankful that The Lord has blessed me with an opportunity to join the staff at Charleston Southern," Murray said. "I’d like to thank Dr. Rick Brewer, Hank Small, Coach Radebaugh and the hiring committee for their support and trust in me."
"I enjoyed my six years at Shorter and am grateful for my time there and the people I was able to work with and learn under, but I am excited to get to work at CSU and to see what The Lord has in store for this University and our team," Murray continued. "This is a special place and I am excited to be a part of the CSU family."
Murray assisted head coach Chad Warner at Shorter after playing for him at Hampden-Sydney in Virginia. In addition to his assistant coaching responsibilities with the varsity program, he also served as head coach for the Hawks’ junior varsity team from 2010-12.

"We had a specific set of criteria that we were looking for in this position on our staff and set out to find an aggressive, proven recruiter that would fit in well with BJ (McKie) and Ahmad (Smith). Tyler fits that mold perfectly."
"Tyler comes from a tremendous program at Shorter and has been instrumental in every aspect of their recent success," Radebaugh added. "Tyler benefited greatly from working for Chad Warner at Shorter. Chad is one of the best young coaches in the country, runs a great program and placed a significant amount of responsibility on Tyler. Tyler, his wife Jessica and their daughter Carson are going to be a great addition to the Charleston Southern Basketball family."
As a player, Murray was a three-year starter and Academic All-Conference selection as a psychology major. A starter on Hampden-Sydney’s 2007 conference championships team, he averaged ten points and six rebounds for his career. Murray is married to the former Jessica Cahill and the couple has a daughter, Carson.
