Chornyei named Assistant Basketball Coach at D3 Stevens Tech

Stevens Institute of Technology head men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley has announced the hiring of Jason Chornyei as an assistant coach Friday. Chornyei joins the program after a one-year stint in the same role at Muhlenberg College.

“We are thrilled for Jason to join our Stevens basketball family,” Hurley said. “His coaching and recruiting experience at successful programs really stood out in the interview process. Jason will be involved in every facet of our program and we are excited to get him started.”

Although the Mules did not have a competitive 2020-21 season, Chornyei and his colleagues continued to develop and engage the student-athletes through practice sessions, individual workouts, film sessions and social media content. The Westerly, Rhode Island native also assisted with the recruiting process for the Class of 2025.

“I am incredibly happy to join the Stevens community and become a member of Stevens men’s basketball,” Chornyei said. “I would like to thank Coach Hurley and Russell Rogers for the opportunity to be a part of such an outstanding program, department, and institution. I look forward to working with the student-athletes and coaching staff.”

Prior to joining the staff at Muhlenberg, Chorneyi spent four seasons patrolling the sidelines at his alma mater, Drew University. With the Rangers, Chornyei helped the program win 71 games, including a 23-7 mark in 2018-19 to set a program record for wins in a single-season. Under his tutelage, nine student-athletes earned All-Landmark Conference recognition and six collected season-end awards, including program alumnus Riley Collins, who was the league’s Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2018-19 and 2019-20). Collins finished his career as the Rangers’ all-time leading scorer.

In addition to his tenure patrolling the sidelines for Drew, Chornyei spent two years as the department’s Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations. Among his duties, Chornyei was responsible for the planning and execution of the department’s annual student-athlete alumni event, while also assisting with other initiatives such as Drew Giving Day and the annual golf outing.

Before returning to Drew to enter the collegiate coaching ranks, Chornyei was the Facilities and Operations Graduate Assistant at Indiana State University, helping the Sycamores host three Missouri Valley Conference championships.

As an undergraduate, Chornyei was a steady presence in the post for the Rangers, scoring 155 points and pulling down 156 rebounds over 68 career games, while also averaging nearly one block per contest.

Chornyei, who originally entered the coaching ranks as a volunteer assistant at Cheshire Academy in 2014, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business from Drew in 2014. He would go on to earn his master’s degree in sport management from Indiana State in 2016.
