Portland State Basketball Coach Tyler Geving has named Chris Skinkis as a new assistant coach on the Viking staff. Skinkis has spent 10 seasons in collegiate coaching at the Division I, Division II and junior college levels.

Skinkis comes to PSU after two seasons as an assistant coach at North Carolina Central. He also has tenures at Indian Hills (IA) Community College, College of Eastern Utah, Lewis University and St. Norbert College.

“Chris is a bright young coach who has worked at various levels and climbed up through the coaching ranks,” said Geving. “He is a great recruiter with ties all over the country, especially in junior college. He and (current) assistant Jase Coburn are two young, hard-working assistants who both love recruit.

“Chris has been a part of winning programs over his coaching career which was another trait we liked about him. We are excited to bring him on staff and look forward to his impact on our program.”

Skinkis is renowned for his recruiting abilities. In three seasons at Indian Hills, he had three recruiting classes that went on to produce 23 Division I players. IHCC was ranked number one each season and played for the national championship in 2014. The program was 93-11 in his three seasons at the school.

Similarly, at Skinkis’ prior stop, College of Eastern Utah was 23-8 in his only season.

In addition to his recruiting skills, Skinkis has also been responsible for scouting and player development.

Originally from the state of Wisconsin, Skinkis earned a degree in Sports Management from Wisconsin-Parkside in 2006, then a Masters degree at Lewis University in 2010.
