Stevenson University head men’s basketball coach Gary Stewart announced that Christian Barnhill will join his staff as a graduate assistant for the 2017-2018 season.
“I am extremely excited about joining Coach Stewart’s staff and becoming a part of the Mustang family,” said Barnhill. “The prospect of being involved in every aspect of the basketball program is very enticing at this early stage in my career. I hope to bring a lot of energy and a strong work ethic to assist with recruiting, player development, and grow the Stevenson basketball brand in the community.”
“I am excited about what Christian will bring to our program,” said Stewart. “He possesses a servitude disposition that puts him in good stead with all he comes in contact with. Christian’s tireless work ethic, high character, integrity, passion and basketball acumen will undoubtedly connect in a favorable manner with our student-athletes. He comes highly recommended and well-versed in all areas needed for success.”
Barnhill served as a student manager at the University of Southern Mississippi, a member of Conference USA for the past four seasons, the last three as head manager under coach Doc Sadler. Along with primary duties of managing equipment and assisting with drills during practice, Barnhill assisted with video operations, scouting, scheduling, team travel and on-court player development. He was involved with recruiting, social media and unofficial and official recruiting visits. Barnhill assisted with fundraising through the Southern Miss Hardwood Club, and was instrumental in the planning and organization of Southern Miss’ basketball camps.
Barnhill, who attended Southern Mississippi on a Leadership Scholarship, graduated this past May with a degree in Sports Coaching Education. He also worked on campus in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and was an active member of the Physical Education Majors Club. Barnhill will work towards his Master’s in Communication Studies at Stevenson.
