Citadel basketball head coach Chuck Driesell announced on Monday that Justin Argenal and Zavier Anderson have been added to his staff for the upcoming 2013-14 season.
Argenal replaces Quinton Ferrell as assistant coach. Ferrell accepted the same position at Army. Meanwhile, Anderson will fill the vacancy left by Pat Rogers, who returned to his alma mater, Notre Dame, as video coordinator.
Argenal rejoins Driesell’s Citadel staff after spending the last two seasons as director of basketball operations at Louisiana Tech under head coach Michael White.
In 2012-13, Louisiana Tech wrapped up the season with a 27-7 overall record, the second-most wins in program history, and posted a 16-2 mark in WAC play that culminated in their first-ever regular season championship. That earned the Bulldogs their seventh berth in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), where they advanced to the second round.
During a stretch from Dec. 17, 2012 thru March 2, 2013, Louisiana Tech won a program record 18 consecutive games which was the second longest streak in NCAA Division I.
Prior to his first stint at The Citadel in 2010-11, when he served as the Dogs’ director of basketball operations, Argenal was a graduate assistant at the University of Mississippi.
"Justin did a great job his first time here on our staff," said Driesell. "He has proven to be a very successful coach as he excelled the last two seasons at Louisiana Tech. I am excited to have him back on staff as he brings great energy and passion for the game and The Citadel."
Anderson assumes the director of basketball operations role on Driesell’s staff. Anderson, a 2011 graduate of Clemson, comes to The Citadel after spending the past two seasons as a graduate assistant under Shaka Smart at VCU.
Anderson was part of a VCU staff that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. He assisted Smart and his staff in the development of players such as Darius Theus (CAA Tournament MVP, 2011-12; Lefty Driesell Defensive All-America Team, 2012-13) and Melvin Johnson (Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team, 2012-13).
Anderson was involved in the day-to-day operations of the Rams’ basketball program. He also assisted in the preparation of film and scouting reports and aided the coaching staff during practices and drills.
A walk-on at Clemson, Anderson appeared in 56 games, scored 47 points, handed out 44 assists and forced 26 steals during his four-year career. During his senior season in 2010-11, he earned the Most Improved Player Award due in large part to playing the most minutes of any walk-on in Tigers history. He made four starts for former head coach Oliver Purnell and was part of a Clemson team that finished 22-12 en route to winning its first NCAA Tournament game in 14 seasons.
"Zavier is a former college basketball player who brings experience and a wealth of knowledge to our program," added Driesell. "His two years at VCU will serve him well as the director of basketball operations at The Citadel."
