Clackamas Community College Head Basketball Coach Clif Wegner passes away

Clackamas Community College has announced the unexpected passing of longtime men’s basketball head coach Clif Wegner, who died peacefully Tuesday morning, July 22, 2025. He was 72 years old.

Coach Wegner served as the head coach of the Clackamas men’s basketball program from 1998 until his passing and was an assistant coach during the 1993-94 season. Over the course of more than three decades with the program, Coach Wegner became a pillar of the CCC community and one of the most respected basketball figures in the northwest.

Under his leadership, the Cougars captured three NWAC Championships (2007, 2009, 2010), and he was named NWAC South Region Coach of the Year five times. In total, Wegner amassed over 550 career wins in the NWAC, and his legacy as a leader, mentor, and educator is unmatched.

“Coach Wegner’s impact extended far beyond the basketball court,” said CCC Athletic Director Jim Martineau. “He was an educator at his core, loved teaching and mentoring. His influence will live on in every life he touched”.

Clif began his coaching and teaching career in 1976 and spent time at Willamina High School and Oregon City High School before making his mark in the collegiate ranks. His coaching career spanned nearly 50 years, and his commitment to student-athletes was evident in every season, every practice, and every conversation.

He is survived by his daughter and a large extended family of former players, coaches, and colleagues who will continue to honor his legacy.

Plans for a public celebration of life will be announced in the coming days.
