On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Guilford College men’s basketball team defeated the Lynchburg Hornets, 75-59. With the win, head coach Tom Palombo reached 600 win milestone as a collegiate coach.
Palombo has coached at the collegiate level for 33 years and has massed a record of 600-261 while leading the Quakers for 20 of those seasons. During that time, Guilford is 362-156 which is second-best in program history behind the late Jack Jensen (386-392).
Over his 33 years, Palombo has made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances including advancing to at least the Elite 8 six times in his career. He was named the Basketball Times National Coach of the Year in 2010 after leading the Quakers to their second Final Four appearance in as many years. The Quakers were ranked as high as number 1 in the D3hoops.com poll and finished the year ranked number 3.
He has received ODAC Coach of the Year honors four times while being the South Region Coach of the Year on three occasions. Under his tutelage, he has guided 19 Quakers to All-ODAC honors and two National Player of the Year honors.
