It’s a busy time of the year for all of us as we prepare for the 2009-2010 season. That being said, it’s now a quiet time of the year for coaching "dirt." Most staff are now settled – you can see by the lack of job postings lately. Here are a few things that we some how missed over the past few months – I figured this is a good time to play a little catch-up……
Harvard hired Yanni Hufnagel to replace Will Wade (departed for VCU). Hufnagel was a graduate assistant at Oklahoma for the past two years, and is a 2006 graduate of Cornell.
New Tennessee State Head Coach John Cooper finalized his staff. He hired Travis Williams, Sheldon Everett, and Dana Ford. Williams was a head coach in China last year, and was the head coach at Fort Valley State from 2004-2007. Everett was an assistant for the women’s program at Tennessee State and Ford was assistant coach at Chipola Junior College last season.
Pittsburg State Head Coach Gene Iba will retire after this season. Iba is the nephew of former Oklahoma State Head Coach Henry Iba, and has a 478-357 record in 29 years of college coaching. Athletic Director Chuck Broyles said that a search will not begin until after the season.
Penn State-Altoona is going to promote Billy Clapper to Head Coach. He had been an assistant in the program for the past four seasons, and replaces Al Seretti who was named head coach at Dickinson College in July.
Our clinics section keeps growing. I am a big fan of getting out as much as possible and hearing what other coaches have to say. Most of these clinics are very reasonably priced. Also, not a bad idea to see if your AD will pick up the tab for you to attend some of these – "professional development" is a hot word with administrators! If you are running a clinic, send us the info and we will post it for you at no charge.
Only 5 more "friends" until we hit 1000 on Facebook! We’ll give a shout out to #1000 and promote their program in the next blog (if they want!) We’ll work on Twitter next – we’re only at 671 followers. I still don’t get the whole "tweet" thing, but whatever……
