The DirtKing is finally back from an extended Memorial Day get-a-way. 10 hours in the car yesterday with Mrs. Dirt and the Little DirtBags was tough……Are we there yet (NO!)……I’m hungry (YOU JUST ATE!)……I have to pee (PEE IN YOUR PANTS…I’M NOT STOPPING AGAIN!). I think it was Mrs. Dirt who asked the last question…….
Anyway, between stuffing burgers in my mouth, and pounding Bud Light’s all weekend, I was able to keep up with a few things. Here’s what I’ve got to start off the week (I guess mid-week for most)………
Lewis and Clark Community College coach Doug Stotler is going to resign to become the AD at Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri. In his 16 seasons at LCCC, Stotler was 310-192. He’s going to be a hard one to replace. As soon as I hear any names, I’ll pass them along.
Martin Newton is going to be named to Coach Cal’s staff at Kentucky. The son of former UK AD CM Newton will most likely be an ops guy. The younger Newton has worked for Nike for the past 13 years (and Converse before that). This is a good hire by Coach Cal – keeping some tradition in the program.
Davis & Elkins College (W.Va) has hired Bruce Martin as their head basketball coach. Martin was an assistant at UTPA who was released when Tom Schuberth was not retained as the head coach earlier this spring. It’s nice to see that Martin has landed on his feet.
Speaking of out of work assistants, former Washington State assistant Mike Heideman has found a job. Heideman who did not make the move to UVA with Tony Bennett, and was not retained by Ken Bone, was named Athletic Director at St. Mary’s Central HS in Neenah, WI. This seems like a good move for the Wisconsin native, especially because it puts him closer to his kids and grandchildren.
Staying with the HS theme, DIII Lake Forest (ILL) College assistant Lee Taylor has been named as the head coach at Roosevelt HS in Sioux Falls. I will post the info to the assistant job at LFC as soon as it becomes available.
Finally, there is still no word on who UTPA is going to hire – it’s the last DI head job out there. I would expect an announcement by the end of the week – Nicholls State assistant (and UTPA alum) Kevin Johnson is still my choice, but I’ve heard St. Edwards head coach Ryan Marks made a good impression during his campus visit. As soon as I hear anything, I’ll pass it along.
