North Dakota State head men’s basketball coach Saul Phillips announced the hiring of Freddy Coleman as assistant coach for the Bison on Thursday, June 13. Coleman replaces Jason Kemp, who was hired as an assistant coach at Toledo in May.
Coleman was the top assistant at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., the past two years under Rich Glas. The Cobbers went from 7-18 his first season to 18-8 last season and advanced to the semifinals of MIAC playoffs.
“Freddy is a great fit for our program,” Phillips said. “He has always been a team-first guy and his interpersonal skills are outstanding. He has learned a great deal at Concordia the past two years and I really look forward to seeing him apply himself to our situation. There is no question he is the type of person I want my players to learn from.”
Coleman played three seasons at North Dakota State from 2007-11. The 6-foot-3 guard played in 31 games for the 2008-09 Bison team that won the Summit League championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament. He missed his junior year with an injury and averaged a career-high 8.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists as a senior in 2010-11.
Coleman graduated from NDSU with a bachelor’s degree in sport and recreation leadership in May 2011.
