The search to replace Doug Wojcik at the College of Charleston is moving quickly. Athletic Director Joe Hull will chair the eight member committee which features former C of C head coach John Kresse. The names that I have heard so far are:
• Anthony Johnson (Scout for the New Orleans Pelicans). A former C of C standout who seems to be the early favorite. Was a second round pick of the Sacramento Kings in the 1997 draft. Played for 9 NBA teams from 1997-2010. Played at C of C for Kresse.
• Earl Grant (Assistant coach Clemson). A native of North Charleston, SC. Has been an assistant at Clemson for the past four seasons. Before that, he was an assistant to Gregg Marshall at both Wichita State and Winthrop. Also spent two seasons at C of C cross-town rival The Citadel.
• Bobby Lutz (Associate head coach NC State): Spent 12 seasons as the head coach at UNC-Charlotte (218-158). Has been at NC State for the past 4 seasons. For what it’s worth, C of C AD Joe Hull is an NC State alum, and his son is a current team manager for the Wolfpack.
• Ritchie McKay (Associate head coach Virginia): Former head coach at New Mexico, Oregon State, Colorado State, Portland State, and Liberty (204-186 in 13 seasons). Was part of a Virginia squad that went 30-7 last season – the Cavaliers are 160-60 since he has been on staff.
• A couple of long shot candidates to keep an eye on…UW Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter and former Boston College head coach Al Skinner. Both of their names have come up in conversations that I have had.
I am quite sure that more names will surface. I will pass them along as I hear them.
