The University of Washington has promoted Will Conroy to Associate Head Coach of the men’s basketball team, head coach Mike Hopkins announced Wednesday. Conroy has served the last seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Huskies.
“I’m thrilled to announce this promotion for Will,” Hopkins said. “He is passionate about coaching and developing student-athletes on and off the court. He is an elite-level communicator and connects with players in a unique way. He also bleeds purple and gold, and loves the UW. I couldn’t be happier to have Will by my side, helping me lead this program.”
Conroy is a Seattle native and Husky alum. During his time at the UW, the Huskies reached the NCAA Tournament twice and earned the program’s first No. 1 seed. They also made their first Sweet 16 since 1998. The Huskies were also dominant in Pac-12 Conference play and won the Pac-12 Tournament in 2005, Conroy’s senior season.
“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to become Associate Head Coach,” said Conroy. “I’m thankful to be a member of such a great staff. As a staff, we are selfless and we put student-athlete welfare first. I want to thank Coach Hopkins for the trust he has put in me. The UW is a special place. As a player at the UW, Conroy finished as the all-time assists leader in program history with 515. He finished third all-time in career assists per game at 4.3, and still holds the senior record for assists (219). Conroy was the first Husky to top the 200-assist mark during a season and the first to surpass 100 assists in three different seasons. Additionally, he was the 23rd player in Pac-10 history to reach the 500-assist plateau and the 18th to also score 1,000 points. He earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 accolades as a senior and was voted the team’s MVP along with serving as the team captain during his junior and senior seasons.
Conroy attended Garfield High School and led the program to four-straight league championships. The Bulldogs boasted a 100-15 record during his prep career and he picked up All-KingCo First Team honors during his senior season after averaging 14.5 points and 3.6 assists.
