Jamon Copeland, the head coach of Ave Maria University’s men’s basketball program since 2009, resigned from his position Monday afternoon, AMU Athletics Director Shawn Summe announced. Copeland has accepted the head men’s basketball coaching position at The University of Texas at Tyler. The Patriots are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and compete in the American Southwest Conference.
After four seasons as the head men’s basketball coach, Copeland has watched the startup NAIA program improve their winning total for each of the last four years (14, 16, 18, 23). Last season, Copeland led the Gyrenes to a program record 23 victories, all 11 weeks either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, climbing as high as number 14 in the country. The Gyrenes also made a semifinal appearance at the USCAA National Tournament.
