CSUB Assistant Basketball coach Kevin Mays pleads not guilty to 11 charges, including pimping & pandering

Cal State Bakersfield Assistant Basketball coach Kevin Mays plead not guilty to 11 charges today, including pimping and pandering.

Mays was arrested last Thursday night on suspicion of human trafficking and related crimes, police said. The Bakersfield Police Department began investigating Mays in August after receiving an anonymous tip that a woman was being trafficked across California, Oregon, and Washington. Detectives later found the victim in Sacramento, where she identified Mays as her alleged trafficker.

Today during his arraignment, Mays heard the 11 criminal charges that were filed against him. The felony counts include pimping and pandering, possession of illegal firearms—among them an assault weapon—and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with the intent to sell. Prosecutors also alleged aggravating factors, noting the crimes involved a particularly vulnerable victim and showed a high degree of planning and sophistication.

Mays also faces several misdemeanor charges connected to firearms and drug possession. He made his first court appearance on September 8 and is being held on $500,000 bail. He is expected to return to court later this month.

A former CSUB player from 2014 to 2016, Mays has been an assistant coach with the program for six seasons. The university confirmed he has been placed on administrative leave.
