Colorado State University Pueblo Athletics and head men’s basketball coach Matt Hammer have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.
Hammer, who recently completed his sixth season at the helm of the program, was the eighth head men’s basketball coach in the school’s four-year era that began in 1963. In his six seasons with the ThunderWolves, Hammer led the program to five 10-win seasons and one appearance in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament. His 2023-24 team won 14 games and qualified for the RMAC Tournament for the first time since 2018, while his 2024-25 squad opened the season by winning eight of its first 10 games and was receiving votes in the NABC/Division II Coaches’ Poll.
He leaves CSU Pueblo with the sixth most coaching wins in the program’s four-year school history with 63.
CSU Pueblo Vice President of Athletics and Strategic Partnerships Dr. Paul Plinske has announced that a national search for a school’s new men’s basketball coach will begin immediately.
Plinske says that the CSU Pueblo is committed to elevating its men’s basketball program to new heights. The focus is on developing a culture of excellence, ensuring RMAC postseason play becomes the standard and reigniting the passion and energy of our student-athletes and fans alike.
