Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)
I can confirm that Andre Gray is no longer the head men’s basketball coach at D2 Elizabeth City State University.
Gray, a coaching veteran, took over at ECSU back in May of 2022. He is no stranger to North Carolina basketball, having served as an assistant at Wingate, Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, Winston Salem State, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, and North Carolina Central.
In his 1+ seasons at ECSU, Gray put together a 17-27 record, including a 4-11 mark this year.
Word on the street is that assistant coach Trey Sumler will take over as the interim head coach. Sumler, a former all-conference player at Western Carolina, had been a high school coach in North Carolina before joining Gray’s staff. *UPDATE – Sumler will not be named as the interim head coach. ECSU will go with alum John Richardson III. More on that one HERE.
More on these moves once they become official.
