UT Dallas Director of Athletics Angela Marin has announced that longtime assistant coach Jared Fleming has been promoted to head men’s basketball coach for the Comets. Fleming is a former UTD standout and has served as an assistant on the coaching staff since 2015. He replaces Terry Butterfield who is retiring after 23 seasons.
In eight seasons as an assistant, Fleming has helped the Comets go 139-64, win the American Southwest Conference title in 2019 and take back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament. He has coached one All-American, four All-District/Region selections and seven All-Conference picks.
“After a national search that warranted a large number of highly qualified candidates, Jared set himself apart by his passion and level of preparedness to take this next step,” said Marin. “Jared is in a unique position as he has chosen to represent UTD both as a former student-athlete and later as an assistant coach. Jared will continue to advance our men’s basketball program in all aspects of academic, athletic and community/alumni engagement and I look forward to the future of the program under Jared’s leadership.”
“First off, I want to thank Angela Marin for giving me the opportunity to lead this program,” said Fleming. “The tradition and foundation that Terry Butterfield put in place over the last 23 years has been incredible, and I have been blessed to play a role in that for the last eight seasons. I am tremendously excited for the opportunity to lead our program into the next era in our basketball history! I look forward to continuing to build on the proud tradition of UTD men’s basketball.”
Fleming returned to UTD after spending one season as assistant men’s basketball coach at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. While with the Mountaineers, Fleming also served as the head coach of the school’s junior varsity squad. Prior to Schreiner, he spent two seasons as an assistant at Franklin College in Indiana.
A native of Hawkins, Fleming played four seasons under Butterfield from 2006-10 and was a part of a Comet squad that reached the NCAA Division III “Elite 8” in 2009 as a junior. That squad was inducted into the UTD Athletics Hall of Honor in 2014. As a senior, Fleming helped the Comets to another NCAA Championship appearance, leading the squad to a “Sweet 16” trip.
Fleming helped UTD to a pair of ASC regular season titles and one conference championship during his playing career. He was named honorable mention All-ASC as a senior and was listed on the ASC’s All-Tournament Team. In addition, he was a three-time Academic All-ASC pick for the Comets. Fleming earned his bachelor’s degree from UTD in Business Administration in 2009 and collected his master’s degree in Finance in 2010 while serving as a graduate assistant for the Comets.
