University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Director of Athletics Wole Oke announced today that head men’s basketball coach Glen Miller will take a medical leave of absence from the program. Associate Head Coach Tyler Olander has been named the team’s acting head coach, effective immediately.
“We fully support Coach Miller during his leave, as our primary concern is his health and well-being,” said Oke. “We will do everything possible to support Coach Miller and the men’s basketball program during this time. Coach Miller and I have the utmost confidence that the men’s basketball program is in very capable hands under the leadership of Coach Olander and the entire coaching staff.”
Olander begins his fifth season at USJ in 2026-27 after joining the coaching staff in August 2022. He has mentored and helped develop 10 All-GNAC selections, a GNAC Player of the Year, two GNAC Defensive Players of the Year, and an NABC Second Team All-American. During Olander’s tenure on the coaching staff, the program has won 32 consecutive regular-season conference games, captured a GNAC Tournament Championship, participated in two NCAA Tournaments, and reached a national ranking of No. 1.
Olander graduated from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in 2014 with a degree in political science and was a two-time national champion as a member of the Huskies men’s basketball team. As a versatile forward, Olander played a pivotal role in UConn’s 2011 and 2014 NCAA Championship runs. Following his collegiate success, Olander took his talents to Europe, where he played two seasons professionally. His international experience enriched his understanding of the game and provided him with a global perspective on basketball strategy and player development.
The Blue Jays open the 2026-27 season at home against (RV) Yeshiva University on Sunday, Nov. 8. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium.
