Daily Dirt – 3/11/14

A few things that I’ve heard today…

• I have heard from two different sources that Virginia Union head coach Luqman Jaaber will not be retained. He has been that head coach there since 2011 and compiled a 31-49 record (6-20 this season). Jaaber was the captain of VUU’s 2005 National Championship team. I’ve heard that the official statement will come later today, or early tomorrow.

• According to multiple reports, St. John’s and head coach Steve Lavin are working on a contract extension. The deal is expected to add four years to Lavin’s existing contract (he has two year’s left on his existing contract). Lavin’s Red Storm are currently 20-11 heading in to the Big East Tournament where they will face Providence.

• I can confirm that Clarendon College (TX) Athletic Director Brad Vanden Boogaard will assume the duties of head men’s basketball coach. He replaces Tony Starnes who resigned last month. In addition to his role as the AD, Vanden Boogaard served as the head women’s coach at Clarendon last season. He has worked on the men’s side before, as an assistant at both Triton College (IL) and Loras College (IA).
