This will definitely be a busy week. Here are just a couple of items to kick it off…
I mentioned some names at New Mexico State in Saturday’s Dirt. Since then, a pretty interesting one has started to surface, as I have heard former Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing’s name come up here. Lansing went 181–164 (.525) in ten seasons at ISU before being released last spring. He is currently a scout with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Early name gaining steam at Northwestern State is Tallahassee CC head coach Rick Cabrera. The former assistant at Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, and Chattanooga currently has TCC at 28-5 as they prepare for the NJCAA D1 tournment next week. Cabrera also spent four seasons as a head coach at NJCAA Lackawanna College, where he went 100-29 (.775).
Search firm update: Kyle Bowlsby and Bowlsby Sports Advisors have Army. And, if you’re keeping track, Drew Turner and Collegiate Sports Associates had Austin Peay.
Mike Hopkins received a vote of confidence, and will return next season as Washington’s basketball coach. Husky AD Jen Cohen told the Seattle Times, “The recently concluded men’s basketball season fell below the expectations that we have for all of our athletic programs at the University of Washington. I am disappointed, Coach Hopkins and his staff are disappointed and, importantly, our passionate fans and supporters are disappointed. After completing a postseason review of the program and after several in-depth discussions with Coach Hopkins, I am hopeful that next season will once again see the Huskies competing for a Pac-12 championship and back in the NCAA tournament. Coach Hopkins understands our expectations and is committed to make any and all necessary changes to get us there.” Hopkins squad went 16-16 (8-12 Pac 12) this past season, and he holds a career mark of 101-91 (.526) in seven seasons.
