Daily Dirt – 3/15/12

Today’s Daily Dirt….

Last night I mentioned that Trace Bevell was no longer the head coach at Western Wyoming CC (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/a4bd2d97/daily-dirt-ii-3-14-12/…). I have now heard from two separate sources that he is in the mix for a spot on Bill Evans’ new staff at Idaho Staff. Evans, the former head coach at Southern Utah, took over at ISU a few weeks ago and has been working hard to assemble his staff.

I have heard that Arizona State GA Justin Bailey is the front runner to replace Sam Belt as an assistant at Arkansas-Ft. Smith. Bailey is a former player at UAFS and has been at ASU since 2010. Belt resigned earlier this week to after he signed to play professionally in Australia (http://hoopdirt.com/news/a7cb88f1/uafs-assistant-resigns/…).

A situation worth monitoring is Mississippi State. Mississippi State AD Scott Stricklin has been quiet about the future of head coach Rick Stansbury, and did not give Stansbury a vote of confidence at a press conference earlier in the week. Stansbury, who has been at MSU for fourteen seasons, has two years left on his contract. If he is retained for the 2012-13 season, it sounds like he has an automatic rollover year that would keep him through 2014-15. I would expect some type of decision here by early next week.

A small college situation to keep an eye on is at Fisk University (TN). I have heard that the women’s coach is out, and there will most likely be a change on the men’s side as well. I’ve been hearing grumblings over the past few days, but it seems like the situation will be decided upon today. I’ll keep you posted. I’ve also heard that Fisk head coach Derek Watkins is involved in the opening at Talladega CC.
