Daily Dirt – 3/23/12

Some “dirt” as we head into the weekend….

I’ve heard that Wisconsin-Whitewater assistant Dick Luther is going to retire. Luther has spent the past 46 years in basketball. I guess he’s figured he should go out on top – Whitewater won the DIII National Championship last weekend.

Not sure what’s going on at the College of Charleston. After Bobby Cremins announced his retirement, many believed that interim head coach Mark Byington would be elevated to replace Cremins on a permanent basis. No announcement has been made, and it now appears C of C will conduct a national search. Byington has been at Charleston for the past nine seasons, and should be in the mix. I have heard a bunch of other names as well and will hope to get my list up today.

The “hot” candidate for the UAB gig is Arkansas assistant T.J. Cleveland. He has been on Mike Anderson’s staff for the past nine seasons at Arkansas, Missouri and UAB. Anderson has said publically that Cleveland is ready to be a head coach is really pushing him for UAB.

Multiple sources are reporting that Florida State is trying to work on an extension for Leonard Hamilton. Probably not a bad idea for FSU to try to keep him happy – he did beat Duke and UNC twice each this season and his Seminoles won the ACC.

Speaking of contracts….interesting situation at Tennessee. Cuonzo Martin’s name has been linked to the Illinois job. While for the most part he has denied interest in the position, he is actually working at UT without a contract. Technically he has a “Memorandum of Understanding” that he signed last spring when he took the job. According to sources, a “real” contract should be hammered out within the next few weeks.

There’s been a lot of turnover on the women’s side over the past few days. For all of the latest job openings, news, and rumors, check out our WBB site – http://www.whoopdirt.com/…
