DAILY DIRT – 3/25/24

Story: Adam Nelson (@HD_DirtKing)

A few things that I’ve heard to kick-off Sweet 16 week…

I have heard that the search at Cal Poly is done, and an announcement could be made as early as today. From what I hear, D2 Colorado Mesa Mike DeGeorge is the leader here. DeGeorge has been a D2/D3 head coach for the past 23-seasons (Mesa, Rhodes, Cornell College, Eureka). In 6 seasons at Colorado Mesa, he is 141-43 (.766). Two other small college coaches, and two HM assistants are in the final group. More on this one shortly.

A name that I keep hearing at UT Martin is Saul Phillips. Phillips has spent the past five seasons at Northern State (99-46), and also served as a D1 head coach for 12 seasons (North Dakota State and Ohio). Working on more names now.

New Houston Christian head coach Craig Doty has confirmed on X that will retain HCU assistant Terry Johnson. The son of veteran head coach Trent Johnson, Terry has also worked at CSUN, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, University of St. Thomas, and California State-Stanislaus. No word on the rest of his staff yet.

It sounds like that the search at D2 Nebraska Kearney is down to three or four finalists. The names that I have heard are Adam Bohac (head coach Central Missouri – a Nebraska native), Marty Levinson (head coach Trinity Valley – Nebraska Kearney alum), and Matt Murken (head coach Minot State).

Names that I have heard in the search at D3 Allegheny include Indiana U (PA) assistant Steve Piotrowicz and Struthers HS (OH) head coach Mike Wernicki (former assistant at Youngstown State and Canisius).

Teased this one in the DAILY DIRT on Thursday…NJCAA D2 Rend Lake College head coach Brian Gamber has resigned. He had been the head coach at RLC since 2020 and played there from 2007-09. The Warriors went 8-23 (1-15) this past season.

PRO TIP: stay tuned for another Illinois JUCO that is opening…
