Daily Dirt – 3/8/12

Pretty quiet day so far – here are a few things that I’ve heard….

Strange situation at Mt. St. Mary’s right now. Early word was that interim head coach Matt Henry would not be considered for the job. I’ve now heard from two different people that not only is he in the running, he may actually be the front runner! I’ve heard that he is meeting with the president of the university today or tomorrow, and if he does get hired, and announcement could be made as early as this weekend. I’ll blog about this again as soon as I hear something.

Sounds like SMU head coach Matt Doherty and AD Steve Orsini will have a little pow wow next Tuesday to discuss Doherty’s future. Orsini is on the NCAA DI selection committee so he’s a bit busy right now! This leaves Doherty hanging for a bit here, but there should be some sort of news coming out of SMU either way early next week.

I have heard that former UM-Dearborn assistant Deajada Smith has gotten involved with the vacancy at Siena Heights. I have also heard that Smith is involved with the open assistant spot at Kennesaw State. We’ll keep an eye out to see where he lands.

A few quick search “timeline” updates….

URI AD Thorr Bjorn has said that he wants a new coach in place by the beginning of April.

Winthrop AD Tom Hickman wants his new coach to be hired “sometime” around the Final Four (3/31 – 4/2).

These are a bit quicker than the 8+ week time frame that was given by Northern Arizona (http://hoopdirt.com/blog/46360d9c/northern-arizona-update/…).
